Based on the reading millions of birds are harmed every year due to glass windows. The article provides three solutions to solve this problem. However, the lecturer explains that none of the reasons are true and refutes each of the author's solutions.
The author suggests that by using one-way glasses in buildings we can prevent birds from crashing the glasses. In contrast, the lecturer demonstrates that these one-way glasses act like mirrors for birds, and since birds do not recognize mirrors the will hit these glasses as well. She gives an example of a tree which is reflected by a one-way glass. As a result, this solution that the author suggested seems to be really dubious.
Furthermore, the reading passage suggests colorful designs on the window glass as a potential solution. The author suggests architectures can use colorful pattern on the glasses to decorate the building and in this way they can prevent birds from hitting windows. Nevertheless, the lecturer illustrates that birds will seek for holes between these patterns and they will try to fly through them. Lecturer states that we can solve this problem by painting patterns which have very small holes, but in this case, most of the sunlight will be reflected by the pattern and inside of the building will be dark. Therefore, painting patterns on glasses cannot be a solution.
Finally, the reading asserts that birds use magnetic fields to find their ways. The author suggests using a magnetic field to guide birds away from the building. The lecturer opposes this solution by explaining that birds use magnetic locating only for long distances such as migrating between to cities. She states that birds use their eyes and brightness of light when they are flying short distances. Consequently, this solution does not possess a strong support in order to be acceptable.
