According to the reading passage, the glass is one of the popular building materials used in the construction of buildings. The author mentions that the glass can be dangerous for birds as they think there are open spaces in the building and so try to fly through them. The reading passage provides three reasons to refute the proposed problem. However, the professor argues that all of them seem impractical.
The first solution is that the constructors can implement one-way glasses to reduce the probability of bird strikes. Although the one-way glasses only are transparent for inside occupants, as the professor states in the lecture they reflect the lights and seem like the mirror. Also, he adds that these reflections can be an image of a tree or the sky, consequently they resemble the open space for the birds. Therefore, this trick cannot be practical and maybe failed.
The second method is that the architectures can use glasses with some stripes on them. The professor claims that this method cannot be feasible by virtue of the birds see the holes and they may try to pass through these holes. In conclusion, according to the professor, they should use windows with extremely small holes but in the result, the inside becomes too dark. That’s why he thinks this method still impractical.
The last method introduced in the passage is that the constructors can use the magnetic field to repel the birds outward. Even though the birds use the earth magnetic field to navigate themselves but as the professor asserts they use it in the long-distance trips for example when they decide to migrate from north to south in winter. Consequently, this method doesn’t work truly so they use their visions for navigation over small distances.
In brief, the professor and author give their contradicting ideas on the feasibility of the using glasses in buildings without causing any troubles for the birds. The professor refuses all the proposed solutions and argues that those methods are entirely impractical.
