Every year, millions of birds get injured when they are flying through glass windows just because they could not distinguish between glass and open air. The reading passage suggests three ways to stop birds from harming themselves. However, all methods are strongly refuted by the lecturer.
First, the author states that using reflex glass instead of regular ones can cause birds to distinguish between open air and glass. Thus, they avoid flying through it. But the professor points out that this idea not only is not going to help them but also it may cause more injuries. Since the reflex glasses are like mirrors, they would reflect the sky or tree, the birds may think it is the real sky or tree. Therefore, they would fly through it. Regarding this situation, the idea of reflex glass is not practical.
Second, although the author believes that by making some colourful strips on a glass, helping birds avoid flying through it, the lecturer cast doubts this idea. He mentions that bird would have flown through an unpainted area which they see as holes. Thus, designers are obliged to create smaller holes. But smaller holes make the room too dark. Accordingly, the idea of designing glass with colourful lines won’t work too.
Finally, in contrast to the idea in the passage of making an electromagnetic field around a building- helping birds to avoid glass and redirect- the professor disagrees with it. He points out that birds use their magnetic ability just during the long trip. So in the short trip, like going from one side of the city to the other side, birds don’t use it, and they only use their eyes and brightness of light to find their directions. Consequently, this idea is also impractical.
