In this set of materials, the reading passage states that agnostids were a group of marine animals that live about 450 million years ago, and their fossils are found. But scientists do not have information about what agnostids ate or how they behave, so the reading provides 3 theories about agnostids lived. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading by providing different reasons (and examples).
First, the reading indicates that agnostids may have been free-swimming predators that hunted smaller animals because agnostids may strong swimmers and active predators; in contrast, the lecturer opposes this view by mentioning that all free-swimming predators have large and well-developed eyes for seeing the prey, and recognize their prey. But, agnostids have small and poor eyes, and some of them may blind; hence, they did not see their prey. So they must have other sensory organs for recognizing and chasing their prey. But, there is no evidence for other sensory organs on the fossil records.
Furthermore, the reading argues that agnostids would have dwelled on the seafloor; conversely, what the lecturer believes is different. She points out that seafloor dweller cannot move fast or move for far distance. They stay in a small area, and a small geographic place becomes their habitat. But, agnostids lived in multiple geographic spaces and they could move fast, so they have been able to move fast from one area to other places.
Finally, according to the reading, agnostids may parasites that lived on larger animals and feeding on them, as the same as many species of modern-day arthropods. However, the professor believes that the population of parasites not very large because they stay on larger organism and if their population become large, their host would kill. But, the population of agnostids were very large, and many kinds of species were found on the fossils records. So it is not correct that agnostids were parasites.
