TPO 43- Agnostids were a group of marine animals that became extinct about 450 million years ago. Agnostid fossils can be found in rocks in many areas around the world. From the fossil remains, we know that agnostids were primitive arthropods-relatives of

The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about different theories about the lifestyle of agnistids, a marine animal which became extinct 450 million years ago. Although the reading mentions three evidences about their life, the lecturer finds them so weak to accept and provides three counter reasons to refute them all.

First off, the reading mentions that agnostides may have fed on smaller animals as active free-swimming predators. However, the lecturer denies this idea by talking about the fact that in order to be predator, agnostides should be provided strong vision supported with big eyes. While, according to the agnostide fossils, they not only had tiny poor eyes, but also in some cases, they were completely blind. Thus, in order to be active predator, they must have had some vital organs in their body to enable them to prey on other small animals which no evidence of special body elements has been found.

Furthermore, the reading explains that agnostides might have been seafloor dwellers which fed on dead organisms and bacteria. The lecturer, on the other hand, argues that not only most seafloor dwellers don't have the capability to swim fast,, but also they prefer to stay localized in one small spot. However, according to the fossils, agnostides swam swiftly and were distributed in the vast areas. Being so portable rejects this hypothesis that they were seafloor dwellers.

Eventually, the reading claims that agnostides were parasites which fed on fish or other larger animals. In contrast, according to the lecture, the usual characteristic of parasites is their small population, otherwise they would kill most of organisms in a habitat. Whereas, the agnostides' fossils have illustrated that they were living in large population with great numbers of individuals. Thus, they could not have been parasites.
