Both the reading and listening focus on the same topic about various agnostids living theories, but they subscribe two different viewpoints. While the reading tries to explain three possible theories about living of these marine animals, the listening puts forward very convincing arguments to rule out these theories.
First, according to the article, it is highly possible that agnostids likes other primitive arthropods were free-swimming predators. However, the professor refutes that by saying the fact that free-swimming predators often have big eyes with a very good visionary, but agnostids had poor eye-sight or were almost blind. In addition, there is not any evidence showing predatory ability in them such as existence of an organ helping them to haunt.
Second, the text indicates that agnostids might have been lived on the seafloor in a similar way that some arthropods have dwelled there. Conversely, the speaker argues that the important characteristic of seafloor dwellers is moving slowly and living in a local region, but surprisingly agnostids lived in many remote areas which indicates that they were fast moving insects. Thus, this theory cannot be validated by the argument written in the text.
Third, the reading passage points out that these tiny animals may be parasites which lived on primitive fish or on other larger arthropods. Nevertheless, the lecturer casts doubt on it by referring the audience to the data showing vast population of the agnostids which is in direct contrast to parasites’.
