Both the reading passage and the lecture focuses on a European silver coin and its validity of it being a genuine piece of historical evidence. While, the author argues that the coin is actually a historical fake which must have been placed at the site recently by someone in order to make people confused, the lecture refutes the points made in the passage by giving logical reasons to prove its originality.
First of all, the author asserts that the coin is fake as the site where it was discovered, i.e., Maine, is situated very far away from other places like eastern Canada where remains of Norse settlements have been discovered. On the other hand, the professor contradicts this statement by saying that the Native Americans were interested in obtaining objects from far away places. They must have traveled long distances to arrive at the original sites of Norse settlements and brought this coin to Maine with them.
Secondly, according to the author, the Norse did not bring any silver coins with them to North America as no other coins have been found at the Canadian sites of Norse settlements. So, he avers that the coin is certainly fake. But, the professors questions the credibility of this statement by putting forward the idea that the Norse did not create permanent settlements in North America. Thus, they must have packed all their belongings with the return journeys and this clearly explains that they must also have took back all the silver coins they brought.
Finally, it is insisted by the author that, since the Norse were experienced travelers, they must have understood that the silver coins would be useless to the North Americans and so they did not bring any coins with them. This point is ruled out by the fact mentioned in the lecture that Native Americans, by nature, were attracted towards interesting and unusual objects. So, they must have found the silver coins to be very beautiful and used them for making jewellery or even in carrying out trade with people.
Thus, the assumptions made by the author about the coin being a fake piece of evidence were contrasted by the logical reasons put forward in the lecture.
