Both the reading and the lecture focus on the possibility of existence of bees 200 million years ago, based on the discovery of very old fossil structures that resemble bee nests. Although the materials presented by the author corroborates his reaching, the speaker offers some evidences to refute them all. The passage brings the idea that the structures were not created by the bees, since the earliest found fossil of an actual bee is only half as old as the discovered fossilized structures. In contrast, the speaker believes that absence of actual bee fossils, 200 million years ago, does not imply the absence of the bees themselves, it can merely be a result of the absence of a sticky liquid produced by trees, called resin, that helped the fossilization of bee’s bodies. In addition, the reading passage reminds the absence of flowering plants, until 125 million years ago, as another evidence to doubt bees’ existence 200 million years ago referring to the idea of bees and flowering plants biological mutual dependence. On the contrary, the lecture suggests the theory based on which bees could had fed on non-flowering plants before the germination of flowering ones and evolved into the modern type ever after their origin. Finally, the author holds the view that the fossilized structures lack some of the fine details of modern nest chambers, suggesting that they were made by other insects. On the other hand, the lecture elucidates on the fact that the structures could have been made by the bees since both modern nest chambers and the found ones are almost chemically the same involving the same water proofing substance.
