The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about the reasons why animals, in the past, were considerable larger than today, and provides extensive information and reasons for support. However, the lecturer casts doubts on the claim of the reading passage, and opposes to each of their arguments.
First of all, the reading passage explains that the size of the animals were related with the amount of oxygen in the past. According to the article, oxygen stimulates the growth of the animals. On the contrary, the lecture refutes this claim and states that in the past the environment was as rich in oxygen as is it today. The lecture states that the high activity of volcanoes at that time, poisoned the atmosphere with toxic gases and pushed away the oxygen. Thus, the reading passage fails to proof that the amount of oxygen was the cause of the large size of the animals.
Secondly, the reading passage sustains that abundant plants and rich nutrients contributed in the lagers size of animals. Again. the lecture challenges this argument by pointing out that, even though the plant life was abundant in the past, it was, however, low in nutrient because of the poisoned air. Consequently, animals size can not be caused by this reason.
Finally, the reading passage explains how some researches believe that the warmer weather at that time could help to increment the size of the animals in the past, because of the less need of energy needed to keep their bodies warmer. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this point by exposing the fact that animals in warm weather need more energy to cool their bodies down and keep them at the same temperature, for instants, in case of mammals.
