TPO-45 - Integrated Writing Task Any student of paleontology will be struck by the fact that a great many animals of the past were considerably larger than they are today. This holds true for species ranging from dinosaurs to most mammals. Just why they w

The reading passage proposes three theories to explain why ancient animals like dinosaurs were large. The lecture points out the lack of evidence to hold those theories true using scientific reasons and common facts.

First, the reading proposes that abundance of Oxygen during early earth days stimulated the growth of animals. However, the lecture counters this theory by stating, there were frequent volcanic activities during that time spewing poisonous gases in the atmosphere. In fact, Oxygen supply was too low.

In addition, the reading claims that, during early Earth time, large supply of plants were available for animals as food source provided adequate supply of nutrients for full growth. Increasing size has genetic component that depended on constant supply of food. The lecture refutes this theory by referring to the fossilized evidence found. Early plant species were lacking in nutrients because the gases required for growth and supply of nutrients were contaminated especially Carbon dioxide.

Lastly, the reading passage argues that, in warm climate large animals does not need to expend more energy to maintain body temperature. And that saved energy was redirected towards cellular growth. The lecture dismisses this point by stating the common facts, typically smaller animals are found in warm climatic regions. Large animals need to spend more energy to maintain their body temperature since their diet portion is also big. Large animals need to cool of quickly.

In conclusion, the lecture dismisses all the claims presented in the reading article and states that those claims are impossible to verify and contradicts the common facts.
