The reading claims that storing patients' medical records in electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based records. However, the lecture finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidences to refute them all.
First, the reading passage asserts that using electronic system reduces costs and leads to saving money. In fact, in that way no space will be needed, it is easy to access, duplicate and transfer them. As a result, this system's costs are much less than the recent system. In contrast, the lecture brings up the idea that cost saving are unlikely significant as the reading suggests. Doctors do not throw out papers and they will keep them as emergency backup. They would be needed for legal reasons. Hence, they still have to pay storage costs. .
Second, the author alleges that electronic system will help reduce the chance of medical errors. In fact, human errors in handwriting would be reduced. Conversely, the professor underlines the fact that this system cannot eliminate errors caused by poor handwriting. Most of doctors still use paper and pen to write prescriptions by hand. It is usually the office staff who will enter this hand-written information in electronic systems. Hence, staff members have to interpret them and as a result, poor handwriting can still lead to errors.
Finally, the reading argues that gathering large amount of data is possible by the electronic system. In addition, it is accessible from any research location. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that it will not be beneficial since, access to all medical resources sometimes are not allowed. It is subjected to privacy laws that allow patients to keep medical information private. Collecting data follows strict procedures and such permissions are not granted.
