TPO-46 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, medical information about patients traditionally has been recorded and stored on paper forms. However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which informa

The article discussed three advantages of using electronic medical record systems comparing to traditional paper-based record keeping. The lecturer, however, asserted that the benefits are actually uncertain.

The lecturer started with arguing that electronic medical records were in fact not reducing the storage costs. Doctors, regardless of using electronic medical record system or not, will keep the paper records for emergency back-up, as the original paper documents with signatures may be needed for legal reasons. As a result doctors have to pay for the storage fee for record saving in any case.

Secondly, electronic medical records will not prevent or reduce errors caused by sloppy handwriting or wrong data transcription, said the lecturer. Most doctors, including those who have adopted electronic record keeping, will still note down the prescriptions by hand while examining patients and the information will be entered into the electronic systems by an assistant at the later stage. The assistant needs to translate the doctor’s handwriting which will not prevent mistakes caused by poor handwriting from happening.

Finally, electronic record system will not be of help to medical research. Researchers will still find it difficult to access to medical information due to strict privacy laws in the country. Patients have the right to decide whether disclosing their medical records to clinical research or not. Researchers will have to undergo strict and complicated procedures and obtain many permissions to access to medical data and information. In many cases, such permissions may not be granted. For example, a patient can choose to block his/her information and reveal it only for his/her own treatment.
