The passage proposes three advantages of electronic medical record systems over tradition paper-based record keeping, all of which were questioned by the lecture.
First off, the professor in the lecture does not believe that the use of electronic records can reduce costs and save space for storage, because doctors still regard paper records as emergency back up with electronic records widely used. Meanwhile, paper records and signature are also important in legal process.
Second, that electronic medical records can reduce the chances of errors is dismissed by the professor as well. In her view, doctors always take notes or write prescriptions on paper and then transfer it into electronic system, Which means that as long as doctors have poor writing skill, chances are good that they would make mistakes.
Last, the professor argued that research is till hard to take although electronic medical records is easy to draw out information and access, for there being too many barriers such as privacy law and strict procedure. Also, it is too difficult to get patients' grant in that they are likely to block the use of their data.
