TPO 47

The reading and the listening passages have conflicting opinions about whether pterosaurs were able to powered fly. The author of the reading believes that they were not capable of it. The lecturer cats doubt on the claims made in the article and brings up three reasons to reject the specific point in the reading passage. she thinks that recent research has shown that they were able to fly with wings.
The first point the author makes is that they were probably cold-blooded like modern reptiles. It is mentioned that powered flight required a lot of energy which slow metabolism in cold-blooded animal cannot generate it. The lecturer opposes this by explaining that fossil of this animal show they have dense hair that need to make body temperature high. She states that like warm-blooded they supply energy for fly.
Secondly, the author contents that pterosaurs were too large, so they were probably so heavy. The article notes that due to heavy body they cannot flap their wings fast enough to fly.The lecturer rebuts this argument. They were light because of the hollow in their bone. She says that due to their bones were not solid they weight low despite of their large size.
Finally, the author states that they cannot jump from their legs or run to gain speed and then jump.
The article established that the pterosaurs back leg muscles were too small and week to allow them to run fast enough. This concept is refused by the lecture which asserts that pterosaurs unlike birds use all their four legs to push of the ground therefore they have no trouble to run or jump.
In conclusion, The lecturer and the author appear in disagreement about ability of the pterosaurs to powered flight. The author contends that they cannot fly due to three reasons which is contradicted by lecturer.
