TPO-47 - Integrated Writing Task
Both the reading and the lecture discuss whether Pterosurs were caple of flying by flappying their wing or not. The author says that this animal was not able to fly and provides three reasons to support this claim. The professor, on the contrary, refuses all reasons provided by the author by saying that the recent research reveals that Pterosaurs may have been capable of flying. The professor asserts three claims to support her view.
Firstly, the reading claims that Pterosaurs were cold-blooded animals and because cold-blooded animals had slow metabolism they were not capable of producing a great deal of energy to fly. The professor, in contrast, casts doubt on this claim by saying that the recent study shows that Pterosaurs had dense hairs which were covering their body like furs. Moreover, the warm-blooded animals have this feature since they want to maintain the body temperature. Therefore, Pterosaurs would not have been a cool-blooded and they could produce lots of energy for flying.
Secondly, the reading contends that Pterosaurs had a large body and were so heavy that would not have been able to fly. The lecturer, by contrast, rejects this idea by arguing that even thought Pterosaurs were large, they were not heavy. he asserts that at this time we now know that they had an anatomical capability to allow them to fly. Pterosaurs' bones were hollow instead of solid; therefore; they had not weight a lot despite being large and the weight was low enough to allow them to fly.
Finally, the reading passage mentions that Pterosaurs had not big and sturdy back leg muscle to allow them to run fast or fly. The speaker, on the other hands, avers that having not enough big and strong back leg muscle is not a problem because the Pterosaurs' method for flying is different from birds flying. birds use their hind limbs and have 2 limbs, on the contrary, Pterosaurs had all four limbs like bats. Therefore, they were capable of flying using those 4 limbs to push on the ground and fly. Moreover, they had no trouble to walk fast and jump high enough to launch themselves into the air and fly.
all in all, the reading hold this opinion that Pterosaurs were not capable of flying, on the other hand, the lecturer says that Pterosaurs were caple of flying and refuses all the reasons provided by the author.
