The reading passage claims that because of changes in the environment, the population of frogs has diminished or in some case, their population has gone extinct. Indeed, their presence is helpful for the entire ecosystem and there are several methods to prevent reduction of frogs' population. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author contends that pesticides have deleterious effects on frogs' population because if pesticides enter the body of the frog, hardly can they breathe. So, laws should be flexible enough to prohibit the use of pesticides in farmlands. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that eliminates the use of pesticides is not economic owing to the fact that farmers rely on pesticides for their crops. Prohibit the use of pesticides could result in severe disadvantages and will destroy the crops.
Furthermore, the author holds the view that fungus play a key role in the reduction of frogs' population and researchers should treat or prevent infections caused by fungus. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that this treatment should be applied individually, which is a hard task to perform and is very difficult. In addition, researchers have to apply this method to frogs' offspring generation by generation.
Finally, as set forth by the author human activities have the negative impact on the habitats of frogs because of excessive water use that is helpful for the development of frogs. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that water use is not a threat. The thing which is a serious threat is global warming that causes drought and prevents frogs' population from growing.
To put it in a nutshell, there is much evidence, having been ignored by the author that these methods are not applicable and helpful in order to increase the population of frogs.
