The reading passage states that humpback whales migrate long distances using the stars in order to navigate and it provides reasons to support it. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas provided by the passage dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author argues that Humpback whales are intelligent enough to use the stars in order to navigate since their brain has a high degree of complexity. In contrast, the lecturer brings up the idea that although it is a fascinating idea, it is not related to the general cognitive ability. As an example, he provides the example of the duck which uses the stars to navigate but it is not very intelligent and just because it has developed this feature in his brain it is using it to navigate. So using stars does not have any special connection to the overall intelligence
Secondly, the reading passage underlines the fact that humpback whales travel in straight lines and animals can only maintain movement in straight direction by using external forces or objects, so the whales can rely on the stars at night to provide them with external signs by which to maintaining movement in a straight line. On the contrary, holds the view that in order to maintain movement in a line you have to use external force and whales use the earth's magnetic field for that purpose. Evidence shows that whales have a chemical in their brain which is called bio magnetite which is sensitive to the earth's magnetic field so that whales use the earth's magnetic field force to move in straight directions.
Finally, the passage asserts that humpback whales exhibit an unusual behavior which is floating straight upward with their heads above the water as though they are looking to the sky and this may be an evidence that they use the stars to navigate. Conversely, the professor dismisses the issue due to the fact that floating on the water has nothing to do with the stars, since many other animals such as sharks do the same thing and they do not migrate and they do this because they want to look for the animals they haunt. and another reason is that whales are usually seen doing this action during the day, when there is no star in in the sky and that must not be a logical reason.
