The passage states that many frog species around the world have declined in number or got extinct. In order to avoid that, it provides three methods. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas provided by the passage dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author argues that frogs are being harmed by the pesticides used by some farmers which causes breathing problems for the frog and finally kills it, so there should be some laws prohibiting the use of these pesticides. In contrast, the lecturer holds the view that reducing pesticides in agricultural areas is not economically fair because the farmers should stay competitive in the market and if some laws limit the usage of these pesticides, it will cause a severe disadvantage to the farmers who do not use pesticides comparing to the ones who use pesticides, because it will cause a great loss in the crops of those farmers.
Second, the reading passage states that a major factor in frog population decline is a fatal fungus and there should be a large scale treatment on frogs. On the contrary, the professor states that these treatments should be applied individually to the frogs; and each frog should be captured and treated individually and another point is that these treatments will not be transferred to the next generations of frogs, so the treatment needs to be applied again and again to each generation. So this method is very difficult and expensive.
Third, the passage asserts that the frog population is declining because their natural habitat is threatened by human activities such as draining wetlands for development, so these actions should be avoided and the habitats should be preserved safely. Conversely, the professor dismisses the issue due to the fact that human acts are not the main issue comparing to the role of global warming since the disappearance of many water wetlands is due to the global warming. Preventing human actions is unlikely to save the frogs from the more fatal factor which is global warming.
