The reading massage lists three reasons to support that humpback whales take advance of stars to navigate during the migration, while the professor in the lecture thinks all three evidence is unconvincing.
The first view the lecturer argue is that there is no direct connection between intelligent and the ability to use a complicated system to navigate. Some birds, like ducks, are able to navigate by sensory stimuli but ducks have average intelligent. The ability is instinct. That is to say, the opinion in the reading that the high intelligence indicates humpback whales can use stars to navigate is not convincing.
Secondly, the reading holds the claim that the straight lines made by humpbacks whales mean they rely on external signs like starts. The professor, however, mentions that there is a different explanation that they actually use Earth magnetic field as the external force. Humpback whales' brains have a special area that is sensitive to the magnetic field and use it to navigate. Thus, the professor fights against the point of view in the reading again.
Finally, the professor represents his idea that spy-hopping has nothing to do with navigation because other non-migration animals, like sharks, have the same behaviour. They may look for food by doing spy-hopping. Plus, humpback whales do this behaviour most during the daytime when must stars cannot be seen, which is far away from the suggestion in the reading that they do spy-hopping for looking at the stars during migration.
