The reading claims that humpback whales use stars to navigate for feeding and mating purposes. The author elaborates on his viewpoints by providing three main reasons. Nevertheless, the professor believes that these concepts have severe seriousnesses and refutes each of them.
First, the reading avers that humpback whales seem to be intelligent enough to use stars to navigate by because their brains are in a high degree of complexity, which determines the intelligence. Therefore, their well-developed cognitive ability seems to be reasonable for their star-navigating ability. However, the professor refutes this concepts by stating that there can be no connection between the intelligence and the ability to use stars for navigation since some kinds of birds such as ducks whose brain level is just above average can use stars to navigate too. And it shows that the navigating ability is the instinct which ducks are born with. Therefore, even if humpback whales have great intelligence, it does not equal to they can navigate by stars.
Furthermore, the article deposits that humpback whales migrate in straight lines since they let stars to act as their external signs for maintaining direction over long distances. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that the only external force humpback whales can sense is the earth magnetic field since they have a special part in their brain called biomagnetite, which helps them to be sensitive to the presence of magnetic fields. So it is clear that it is the earth magnetive field rather than stars to motivate humpback whales to migrate straightly.
Lastly, the article asserts that humpback whales exhibit an unusual behavior called spy-hopping, which means they will flow straight up for minutes at a time with heads above water, in order to look at stars to navigate. Conversely, the professor casts doubt on this claim by stating that there are only possible reasons to explain the phenomenon. For example, sharks have the spy-hopping behavior too but they do not migrate, so their goal is to look for animals to hunt. Besides, humpback whales usually spy-hopping at daytime, when stars cannot be seen. Therefore, the reading' explanation is just pure spectation, which is not convincing.
