TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task
Recently there has been a ton of debate as to the migrating behavior of different animals. More specifically, in regards to the reading passage, the author puts forth the idea that the migratory behavior of humpback whales using stars is puzzling. however, the professor in the listening excerpt opposes this idea. In fact, he believes that this idea is not convincing and have flaws to some extent.
First and foremost, the author states that the humpback whales use the stars to navigate their way and this signifies their intelligence. As their brain in more complex than other animals, it is believed that they are more intelligent. In the listening passage, however, the speaker states that there is no connection between their navigation using stars to their intelligence. some animals are born with this basic cognitive ability to use stars for migration.
Secondly, one group of experts, suggested by the writer, think that the whales navigate along a straight line using some external objects or forces which is stars in this case. The speaker refutes this claim by explaining that the whales can sense earth’s magnetic field as there is a biomagnetic material in their brain. So, the claim about the star as the migratory objects seems to be flawed.
The author wraps up his argument by contending that sky-hopping may be the way of looking at the stars by the whales. Not surprisingly, the professor takes issue with this rationale by suggesting that some other animal like shark also shows this phenomenon and they use it for different purpose rather than migration. Additionally, the sky-hopping is usually seen during the daytime when there is no way of seeing the stars.
To recapitulate, both the author and professor has conflicting views about the migratory behavior of humpback whales. It's clear that they will have trouble finding a common ground on this issue.
