TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: the

In the reading, the author claims that humpback whales migrate and they use stars for navigation by pointing out 3 reasons of support. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.

At first, the author argues that so intelligent are humpback whales that they can use stars for navigation. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there is no connection between intelligence and navigation. Birds and ducks navigate their route, however they are not intelligent. And this behavior is instinctive for animals.

In addition, the reading passage holds the view that humpback whales migrate in straight lines due to the existence some external objects and forces like stars for humpback whales. On the other hand, the lecture disputes this point by clarifying the fact that there is a bio magnetic power in the brain of whales which is sensitive to earth magnetic field.

Finally, the author asserts spy-hopping that is a behavior in which humpback whales look upward when their head is above the water and an explanation for this behavior is that they are looking at the stars for navigating. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by pointing out that besides humpback whales, sharks do this behavior although they do not migrate, and states that they do that just for haunting animals. Also, they do this in day when there is no star.
