In the reading, the author claims that there are some debates about humpback whales’ migration to long distances, but there are some reasons showed they might be navigating by the stars, by pointing out three reasons of support. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that humpback whales could utilize stars to navigate owing to the fact that they are seem to be clever enough. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there is not any connection between animal's ability of navigating by the stars and the animal's intelligence. According to him, some other animals such as ducks navigating by the stars but they are not smart. This is merely owing to they are born in this way.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that humpback whales could maintain movement in straight lines for long distances. Thereby, they orient themselves by some external forces. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes this idea by clarifying the fact that animals that have this ability, have some external force named magnetic field. He explained that, these animals have bio-magnetic in their brains, which enable humpback whales to be sensitive to Earth's magnetic field. so, stars have nothing to do with this claim.
Finally, the author asserts humpback whales have an unusual behavior which is known as spy-hopping, besides, it is rare among marine animals which one explanation for this function is that these animals are looking at the stars, as the last point for supporting the allegation. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by pointing out that spy-hopping has nothing to do with stars. As he stated, some sharks conduct this behavior but they do this in order to looking for their preys and haunting them not for migration. Besides, humpback whales conduct this function even at day which there are no stars in the sky Thereby, this is merely a pure speculation.
