The passage and the lecture are mainly about the navigating of humpback whales migrating. The author believes that humpback whales are navigating by stars. However, the professor argues it is not really convincing.
Firstly, according to the passage, humpback whales have enough intelligent to use stars to navigate by. Nevertheless, the professor points out that there is no connection of intelligent with their navigating by stars. He give an example that ducks do not have enough intelligent while they can also be navigating by stars for the simple reason that they are born with that.
Secondly, the author suggests that humpback whales migrate in straight lines. Although animals can maintain movement in a straight direction for a long distance only if they orient themselves by some external objects for force, and there is not only one external objects for force. On the other hand, the professor claims that humpback whales may navigate by earth magenic for it can also give a straight direction.
Finally, he passage indicated that humpback whales exhibit an unusual behavior that they are sometimes observed spy-hopping. On the contrary, the professor states that not only humpback whales do such things, but also the shark. The shark never migrate, so they spy-hopping only for hunting. Then the unusual behavior has no connection with humpback whales are navigating by stars.
