TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: the

Both the reading passage and the listening talk about navigating systems of humpback whales using stars. The reading passage gives us three theories of humpback whales using stars to navigate. On the other hand, the listening refutes with the reading passage, telling us why.

First of all, the reading passage states that humpback whales can navigate using stars due to their high intelligence. On the contrary, the listening disagrees with the reading. The lecturer argues that there is no connection between stars and intelligence of humpback whales. The professor gives us an example of a duck to explain why. The professor mentioned that ducks have almost same intelligence as humpback whales but it never used for their navigation purposes. Therefore, the listening strongly states that there is no connection between stars and intelligence.

Moreover, the reading claims that humpback whales migrate in straight lines since they are orienting themselves by some external objects or forces like stars. However, the professor insists that it cannot be true and tells us why. The professor says that some external objects or forces that the reading passage mentioned is a magnetic field from earth, not stars. The lecturer mentions bio-magnetic to explain his statement. The lecturer says that bio-magnetic stored in humpback whales' brain helps them to sense the magnetic field from the earth and navigate their ways.

Finally, the reading passage argues that an unusual behavior like spy-hopping is a reason why humpback is using stars to navigate. The reading passage also mentioned that the whales were floating straight up for minutes, putting their heads above the water. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees with the reading. The lecturer says that the spy-hopping very rare from humpback whales. The professor provides an example of sharks to support her statement. The lecturer said that sharks do spy-hopping but they never really migrate or look at stars. Also, the professor mentions that sharks do spy-hopping when only looking for prey to hunt. The professor also said that sharks do spy-hopping only at days, not at the night. Therefore, the lecturer thinks the reading passage's statement if a pure speculation.

In conclusion, the lecturer refutes the points made in the reading.
