TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: the

The reading passage holds the view that humpback whales are navigated by the stars when migrating. The lecturer refutes this idea and thinks the evidence presented in the passage are unconvincing.

First, the reading passage states that the high intelligence of humpback whales allows them to use stars to navigate by. However, the lecturer argues that this idea lacks real connection between the high intelligence and the ability to use stars to navigate by. The lecturer indicates that there are other animals, like ducks, navigated by stars. Ducks are only of average intelligent. Their ability to use stars does not seem to have connection with their overall intelligence. This indicates that using stars to navigate by is not a sign of high intelligence. So just because humpback whales are highly intelligent, doesn't mean they use stars to navigate.

Second, the reading passage states that humpback whales use stars to keep them migrating straight lines. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that there may be a different explanation for the humpback whales' ability to navigate in a straight line. Animals that migrate in a straight line have to sign external objects or force. Instead of using stars, the external force that humpback whales are using could be the earth magnetic field because of the biomagnetite in its body. Generally, this substance makes animals sensitive to Earth's magnetic field. The fact that there is biomagnetite in the brain of humpback whale is suggesting that the whales is navigating by the magnetic field rather than the stars.

Lastly, the reading passage regards the spy-hopping as the behavior humpback whales to look for stars. Nevertheless, the lecturer says this behavior has nothing to do with looking at stars. Many other animals, like sharks that don't migrate or look at stars, perform this behavior as well. They use spy-hopping to look for animals to hunt. Also, humpback whales often carry out this behavior during the day when there is no star to be found.
