Both the passage and the lecturer discuss the possible solutions to reverse the current tend of increasing salinity in Salton Sea, in order to save the fish and birds living in that place. Accordingly, the passage tries to present three distinct options and support the feasibility of them. In contrast, the lecturer points out that, non of the solutions are practical and they would not work out. The details of the contrast between the passage and lecture is presented in the following section.
First, the article comes up with the idea of removing salt from water in special desalination facilities. These facilities would be able to emit some portion of existing salt in the water and, gradually, decrease the salinity of water. While, the lecture illustrates that, the residual of mentioned procedure, which is solid salt, could be severely hazardous to the environment. As a result, this can not be a great solution.
Second, the article proposes diluting the salt level of lake with ocean water. This solution requires a long distant channel or pipeline to convey the ocean water for about 100 kilometers distance. Although the lecture does not refute the possibility of this solution, it illustrates that, such a channel would be incredibly expensive to build.
Furthermore, the passage claims that, constructing some separator walls inside the lake, can help to channel enough fresh water to the main body of lake and keep it alive in the future. The lecturer denies this claim and points out that, the area is potent to devastating earthquakes, and the walls would collapses by the first earthquake.
