TPO-50 - Integrated Writing Task: Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth

The reading and the lecture are both about travel to Mars. The author of the passage feels that it is problematic to send people on Mars. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that humanity have found the solutions to problems suggested.

To begin with, the author argues that constrained storage of food, water and air will be an issue. The article mentions that roundtrip to Mars will take two years and spacecraft has no enough space for needed enormous amount of food. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that hydroponics, growing plants in water, without soil, can be used as a solution. This kind of crops will not take much space, waste water can be recycle and used for drinking and plants will create fresh air for astronauts.

Secondly, the writer suggests that continuous pastime on zero-gravity area will cause health problems such as decrease of muscle strength and decline of bone density. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that people have an experience staying on zero-gravity locations. She elaborates on this by bringing up point that regular exercises and vitamins will support muscle tone and bone density.

Finally, the author posits that unlike Earth Mars is not protected from Sun radiation, so hazardous amount will be harmful. Moreover, it is stated in the article that making a shield all over the spaceship will disadvantageously increase mass of the rocket. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that radiation does not occur all the time, it is only occasional, so small shield may be carried on spacecraft. Major work will be done on open space, whereas during radiation period under shielded area.
