The reading passage and the lecture both discuss that the level of salt in lake's water in the Salton Sea in California has been increasing steadily for years and the author proposes some theories that may reverse the trend of this increase. However, the lecturer does not conceive the theories convincing and refutes them all.

First, as it set forth by the author, one option may be the direct removal of salt from the lake's water by pumping the water into desalination facilities and then heating the water. On the contrary, the lecturer being critical of this theory contends that the desalination may raise some problems. By evaporating the water the solid material that will leave behind might be toxic and also some evaporated materials like selenium will damage other animals of the lake' health.

Second, the author states that diluting the salt level with the water from the ocean may be another option because the ocean contains much less salt than the lake. On the other hand, the lecturer posits that this theory will not solve the problem. Because diluting the salt level would require the government to invest money on that for building pipelines and canals but as she said the government does not have enough resources.

Third, the reading mentions that building walls to divide lake into several sections is another solution and in the smaller section, there would be no control over the salinity level. Not regarding it persuasive, the lecturer says that this solution is unlikely to work in long-term because if some natural disasters like earthquakes happen, it will destroy the wall easily and the wall will collapse. That being so, the water in the two sides of walls will be combined.
