The reading and the lecture are both commenting on options for reducing salinity of the Salton Sea. The author provides three solutions for the problem. The lecturer, however, finds them dubious and casts doubt on the solutions proposed by the reading passage.
According to the reading, the salinity of the sea can be decreased by direct removal of salt. Conversely, this specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that the solid materials left behind from evaporation of sea water can cause other harmful pollutions in the region. Additionally, she points out that the remains of evaporation can produce selenium that is a great harmful element for humans and other creatures.
Further, the reading passage holds the view that adding water from the Pacific Ocean can help to dilute the salt in the Salton Sea. On the contrary, the lecturer asserts that the government does not have enough resources for digging tunnels and channels from the ocean to the area. Additionally, she points out that the distance between the lake and the ocean is too far and demands a lot of money to make facilities.
Finally, the author posits that building walls and dividing the lake to separate sections can help reducing salinity. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that the location of the lake is geologically active and strong earthquakes happen frequently. She notes that with the first strong earthquakes walls are fell down and the salty waters leak to other sections and make them salty again.
