Both the passage and the lecture discuss the increasing salinity of the Salton Sea in California. The reading proposes several ways to stop or reverse this phenomenon. On the other hand, the professor states that those solutions are unrealistic and impractical and opposes each one.
First, the passage claims that they can pump lake water into special desalination facilities, and through that process, decrease the amount of salt in the water. Nevertheless, the professor denies this view and describes that it will cause some serious problems. She explains that in that process, some solids will dissolve into the water and pose a health risk. Also, some of the chemicals are toxic and can be carried by wind to places where people live and dangerously affect their life.
Second, the article indicates that by directing water from the ocean into the lake, the lake water salinity will decrease. Nonetheless, the lecturer rejects this idea and illustrates that, in this case, the government has to construct pipelines and canals for about 100 kilometers. She states that this process will be expensive, and the government may not have enough money to perform it.
Finally, the author states that constructing walls in the lake would divide the lake into several sections. After that, they can direct freshwater into the main sections, and only smaller sections remain salty. However, the speaker refutes it, saying that it will not work for a long time. She claims that there are many geological activities, such as earthquakes in that region. If a strong earthquake happens, those walls will be destroyed, and water from high salinity parts will flow into low salinity sections.
