The reading and the listening passages are both about the Salton Sea, which is an inland lake. Its salinity has been increasing steadily for years because of the water evaporation. While the reading provides three solutions to the problem, the professor casts doubts on them.

The author of the reading mentions that direct removal of salt from lake water by special desalination is one option. It mentioned that the water would be pumped into the facility to evaporate and remove salt and solid materials. The lecturer, on the other hand, explains that this process would create another type of toxic materials such as Selenium. This material will damage peoples’ health.

In addition, the writer claims that we can dilute the salt by bringing ocean water by pipelines or canals. Pacific ocean is less salty by 20 percent, so it would dilute the lake’s water. The professor, however, contends that the pipes are very expensive especially that the nearest shore is 100 km away from the lake.

Finally, the article states that constructing walls to divide the lake into sections could help. The professor rebuts this point. She says that the surrounding area is experienced volcanic activity like earth quick’s. therefore, the walls would not last for a long time and if they collapse the water would mix up.

All in all, the professor debunks all of the three options.
