In view of the reading, the author enumerates several solutions for diminishing the level of salt in the Salton sea in California by pointing out 3 reasons of support. Finding the statements arguable, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made by the article and presents a piece of evidence in contrary.
At first, the author argues that it could have a great effect if they use desalination facilities in order to separate salt from the water and bring the salt-free water to the sea. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that this solution seems good but has a critical problem. When the salts left behind during the process, other chemical materials stay with them which could be dangerous for human health.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that another possibility is related to dilution. As a matter of fact, the Pacific Ocean contains 20 percent less salt compared to the Salton Sea and it would be a good idea if they add the ocean water in sea in order to dilute it. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying the fact that there are huge of costs related to constructing the new pipeline for long distance and the government do not accept to pay such these costs.
Finally, the author asserts use of constructing wall and create several sections in order to provide situation in which can add a water from small rivers to them, as the last point for supporting a solution to decrease the salinity. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by elucidating that this solution can work for short time and in the long run, it can create geological event such as great earthquake, so in no way was it possible to reduce the amount of salt and maintain the health of the sea.
