TPO 55 Writing 1Because of climate change, more and more land that was once used to grow crops or provide food for animals is turning to dry, unusable desert land. There are many proposals about how to stop this process, known as desertification. A number
In the passage, the author argues that use of box-shaped device surrounding the young trees wouldn't be the best way to grow trees in dry areas in danger of desertification and brings up three reasons to support that. However, the professor contends that the reasons are not very convincing and the box-shaped devices worth fighting against desertification.
At first, the passage holds the view that devices costs alot and as a result growing trees would be a expensive process, since meaningful efforts to fight desertification involve growing millions of trees. The professor, on the other hand, believes that as the trees grow bigger their devices are removed and will be used for new and young trees. In fact each device can be used twenty two times, and if you divide the device cost by number of trees it would be a reasonable price.
Additionally, the writer mentions that local people are asked to install and maintain devices, whereas these people are working in harsh conditions and sometimes have hard time to provide food for their families. Therefore, it would be challenging to motivate these people to look after trees that cannot serve as a source of food for them. Nevertheless, the lecturer states that still there are possible rewards for these people. For instance, they can collect these devices to grow other plants and have more vegetables as a source of food. Moreover, when the trees grow they can use the branches as fire wood. Accordingly, both extra vegetables and fire woods would motivate people to help.
Finally, the author suggests that the device's ability to collect and conserve water is limited, which only can provide water to keep a small tree alive. Once the trees become too big for device, they mat not be able to survive. On the contrary, the woman points out that when the trees grow their roots will be long enough to reach down the moist beneath the surface. Therefore, once trees' roots reach the moist they can survive without the device. Actually, ninety nine percent of trees are still thriving after device beeing removed.
