The reading passage and lecture both talk about the spread of cheatgrass and its conversion to the dominant plant. The reading passage mentioned several solutions by ecologists against cheatgrass. However, the lecturer rejects the claim made in the reading, casting doubts on all three solutions presented in the passage.
First, the passage mentions that by encouraging grazers to eat cheatgrass as a meal. when the grazer is released in a field filled with cheatgrass, the cheat grass will be consumed by grazers. Then, remain room for other native species to grow and flourish again. Nevertheless, the lectures put forward the counterarguments that cheatgrass is not a preferred plant for grazers to feed from it. Therefore, grazer not only does not eat cheatgrass but also endanger native species because, firstly, they prefer to eat native grass and
thus destroying all others before cheatgrass.
secondly, the passage asserts that burning cheatgrass is one of the other options, as declared by the passage by controlling the fire of grasslands, which can destroy them because cheatgrass is highly flammable. After that cheatgrass seeds are spread on the field for helping them to grow in the field. The lecture, however, states that cheatgrass each year creates many eggs which buried below the surface. Thus if burned cheatgrass just is destroyed its over-surface plant. In springtime, its seeds grow again and so quickly come back to the area.
The passage finally argues that by presenting fungal parasites next to the cheatgrass that can invade a state by the passage in the place where the cheatgrass is a native plant, fungal species control cheatgrass reproduction, and that makes it possible for native North American plants to better compete against cheatgrass. but also this solution was rejected by the lecturer who argues that cheatgrass, for thousands of years, has been living beside the fungal species hence they are resistant to fungal and just weaker or older cheatgrass can be affected by fungal.
