The reading and the lecture are both about an international certification that wood companies can get if they meet high ecological standards. The reading states that this certification cannot be useful for American companies and provides three reasons to support this idea. However, the lecturer disagrees with the reading and rejects all of the three reasons that are mentioned in the reading.

First, according to the reading American people do not pay attention to advertises, because there are many of those labels that are not true like labels that say the product is new or improved. In contrast, the lecturer believes that people do not treat all Ads in the same way and they can distinguish the difference between a claim that a company may do and a certification that a company got from an independent organization.

Next, the reading declares that companies which get those certifications will add the costs to the price of their products. As price is an important motivation factor for American people, the demand the good will decrease. The lecturer refutes this claim and points out that if the price difference be less than 5% people do not care about it and pay more attention to the value of environment protection.

Finally, the reading mentions that American companies do not export their products, so this certification is not useful for them. On the contrary, the lecturer explains that although American wood companies sell their products to domestic consumers, they have many foreign competitors which have that certification and can attract American buyers to themselves.
