In these materials, the reading states that there a lot of doubts about accuracy the Chevalier's memoir, and the author provides three claims to clarify these doubts ; however, the professor asserts that these sources are pretty accurate and reliable, the lecturer casts doubt on the reading's claims by stating some problems it has.
Firstly, the reading claims that the Chevalier is very poor in Switzerland, and also he borrowed some money from a swiss merhant, so this suation revealed that he was poor in the Swithzerland. Yet, the professor alleges that he was not poor, and also he participated in huge parties and gambling, so this was a great evidence that he had a lot of money. Besides, he converted his assets into money when his money ran out, and also taking money could take a few days. Therefore, he borrowed some money from his friends or other people until his money was provided him. As a result, this refutes the first claim in the reading.
Secondly, the reading states that there are some doubts on accuracy of the conversations that Chavalier recorded in the memoir between himself and the Voltaire. On the other hand, the lecturer says that he wrote down these conversations each night to remerber these memories easily. Besides, it is evident that he costantly captured his memories, and also it was regularly comfirmed that he composed the memoir by capturing every notes and journeys in detail. That’s why the professor weakens the second point in the passage.
Finally, despite what the reading claims, the lecturer asserts that prisoners were more powerful than him but they were not able to escape from the prison, so none of these prisoners didn't want to take bribery from him in order to free him. In addition, the government explained that the ceilings in his room needed repairing extremely, and also the government reached the conclusion that he escaped from the prison in his own efforts by making hole on the ceiling. As a conclusion, the last claim in the reading is demolished by the professor.
