The reading specifies that accuracy of memoir writtend by the Chevalier is skeptical since plenty critics claims he distorts many events to make his life more exciting. Nevertheless, the professor casts dount on it and believe that the memoir are pretty accurate and reliable source.
First, the reading states that the Chevalier was not wealthy because borrowed considerable sums of money from a Swiss merchant. However, the speaker states that the Chevalier who borrowed a great deal of money, was not poor. He has a lot of assets which solds and uses its money for parties and gambling. Therefore, the Chevalier was forced to borrow money since he was waiting for his money to arrive.
Second, according to the lecture, the Chevalier completed his memoir after many years that meets Voltairs. Hence, it is not possible to remember all the conversation accurately. In contrast, the lecturer explains that the Chevalier after meeting the Voltaire wrote what he remembered about their conversation each night.
Third, based on the passage, the Chaevalier did not escape from ceiling. He had a number of politically well-conected friend who offered bribes to jailer to let him escape. On the contrary, the speaker assests that many other prisons have more powerful friends than the Chevalier but they could not escape the prison by bribing. Also, the ceiling of the Chevalier was repaired after his escape and because of that we can accept the fact that he escapes from ceiling.
