TPO INTEGRATED 26

There has been some debate among whether the zebra fish invasion ca be topped or not. The lecturer says that there are many new methods to control the invasion of the zebra muscles.  However, The  author of the reading claims that  the invasion of the zebra muscles can not be stopped, and the invasion causes serious problems to fresh water fish population.

The first area of dispute is that the history of the zebra muscles invasions suggested that the muscles population  might be unstoppable. According to the professor there are new ways to stop the invasion of the zebra muscles, as people now have enough knowledge than before.  The ship should required to empty the ballet water which contain a lot of zebra muscles and filled with ocean salt water. The salt water of the ocean will kill the muscles. However, this directly contraindicate the author idea which says that because the muscles are easily attached to the bottom of the ships which have ballast water the muscles invasion can not be stopped.

Another controversial issue  is that zebra muscles can easily dominate  in their new habitats. The professor says that in the beginning the zebra muscles will not have any predators but by time after the local aquatic birds know that there are a new source of food, the zebra muscles will be eaten by the aquatic birds. So the zebra muscles will not be able to dominate their habitats after a while. But, the author argued that the zebra muscles will dominate the area as they will not have any predators as well as they can easily reproduce and increase in number.

The final point of the debate is  that the zebra muscles cause overall decline in the fish populations. The professor argues that the zebra muscles  have a negative effect on some fresh water fishes like plankton eater fishes, however they have positive effect on other fishes. According to the professor, the zebra muscles generate some nutrient essential for some fresh water fishes, that way they increase their populations. Yet, the  author argued that the zebra threaten the populations of most fresh water fishes.
