Summarise the points made in the lecture. Be sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage - Turtle Excluder Device (TED)
The reading passage and the lecture are both about Turtle Excluder Device (TED). The lecturer completely refutes all the three arguments in the article. She argues that these explanations are faulty.
Firstly, the lecture states that the metal grid, that forms the metal barrier, is ineffective in prevent that turtles get caught because a lot of baby turtles and many turtle’s species that are smaller are still captured. Furthermore, shrimp are still capable to scape and remove such barriers. This directly opposes with the reading passage that states that the design of TED invention is one of the ineffable reasons to reduce the turtle’s deaths per year.
Secondly, the lecturer explains that is impossible that an organization can effectively monitor the application of the “Shrimp-Turtle Law” and the installation and maintenance of TED. This idea disagrees with the article that states that there are specific organizations to monitor and ensure these approaches.
Finally, the lecturer believes that since shrimp business is an international matter, the documentation required can be easily counterfeited in different countries and the organization can not recognize if it is real or bogus. The article, on the other hand, states that countries and companies will decide to comply and install TED to be able to continue in the shrimp business and export to US and some European counties.
