Both the reading and lecture are about Salvage logging which is a method for gathering dead trees and cleaning the forest after burning in fire. The reading provides three reasons that this approach is advantageous and then supports them. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. The professor believes that Salvage logging can create serious long-term problems; meanwhile he finds all reasons dubious.
First of all, the author of reading contends that the dead trees take a long time to decompose; hence, if we remove these trees from the forest, new space will be establish and it will allow the forest to grow quickly. This point is challenged by the lecturer. The professor declares that gathering and cleaning dead trees is not vital for the growth of the new trees. One should not forget that since dead trees gradually decay, they will be able to provide some nutrition for the soil and other small organisms.
Secondly, the article states that decaying wood is a perfect place for a type of beetle which is called spruce bark beetle and it can ruin the fresh condition of forest. This argument is rebutted by the professor. She claims that these types of beetles have lived for a long time in the forest without any serious damage. The lecturer elaborates on this by mentioning that besides this beetle, the decaying trees are the best habitats for other insects and birds that they contribute to maintain the forest in a health circumstance.
Finally, the reading passages proposes that Salvage logging can be helpful in economic field because wood industries can obtain numerous wood and also they can hire more staff for gathering dead trees; consequently, the unemployment will be reduced. On the other hand, the professor refutes this statement. She expresses that the economic benefits of this approach will not be noticeable because the industries have to use a lot of mechanical devices and also helicopters; subsequently, this can reduce economic profits and also these types of jobs will be permanent just for local people not in global level.
