TPO23- Question : Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
In the reading passage, the author claims that are three possible explanations for the decline of yellow cedar. However, finding all the ideas implausible and questionable, the professor casts doubt on what is presented and states some evidence to the contrary.
To begin with, the writing suggests that the decrease of the yellow cedar can be caused by insect parasites, such as bark beetle. This specific argument is challenged by the lecture. He rejects this by mentioning that health cedars are very resistant to parasites. As a result, the professor feels that this cause is not a fundamental cause.
Secondly, the author believes that a possible explanation for the decline of cedar's trees are attributed to brown bears. In the other hand, the lecture explains that this idea does not justify the decline of these trees in some areas that do not bears, such as in the island. Therefore, he thinks that this concept is faulty.
Finally, the author posits that a change's climate might be capable to frozen the yellow cedar's root, killing it. But, this idea is rebutted by the professor. He argues that the decline of the cedars occur more in warm and lower areas than in cold and high areas. Hence, the professor believes that the frozen root is not a possible cause for this problem.
