In the lecture, the professor makes a series of points that cast doubt on all the arguments presented in the reading passage about Edmontosaurus survived the winter by migrating south to more hospitable regions. Also, he says that the hypothesis that the reading suggested it is unconvincing.
The first area of debate is that Edmontosaurus might be migrated to find food because in the cold weather there is no vegetation to feed on. The professor does not believe that these animals have to migrate to find food as the reading suggested. In fact, the weather in the arctic was warmer than today, and the sun was shining for 24 hours per day. In addition, there was much vegetation that grows, and also, these animals can feed on the dead plants. Therefore, Edmontosaurus did not have to migrate a long distance to find food.
The second controversial issue is that Edmontosaurus would have been lived in herds, which supported that these animals migrate. The speaker contradicts that living in a herd should be considered as evidence for migration as the reading stated. Furthermore, there are many kinds of animals that live in a herd, but they did not migrate. Moreover, some animals live in groups to protect themselves from predators. Therefore, living in a herd might have another reason rather than migration.
The final area of dispute is that Edmontosaurus can be walked and run so fast, so they could migrate so quick. The lecturer opposes that all Edmontosaurus can walk so fast like the juveniles. Furthermore, adult Edmontosaurus prefer to stay with their babies rather than migrate and leave them. Besides, if they moved and left the young ones behind, they would be eaten by predators.
