in the reading, the author raises three strong arguments to cast doubt on the existence of a burning mirror in the ancient Greek port city. however, the lecture states that the burning mirror might have one been existence by refuting the reasons in the reading one by one.
first, the reading states that the ancient Greeks were not technologically advanced enough to make such a device .yet the lecture shows by experiment that dozens of small polished copper may do the same job efficiently greeks mathematic was good enough to accomplish it perfectly.
second, the author believes that the burning mirror would have taken a long time to set the ships on fire. while the speaker says that the author assumes the ships were all of the wood that takes ten minutes to burn but it is not true, the Romans used a sticky substance with the name pitch, the pitch was used between wood in order to prevent water entering the ship. when fire catches the pitch, it sets in fire quickly then after seconds all over the ship will be burned and it happens just in a second and does not need ten minutes.
third, the reading claims that Greeks have already had a weapon like burning mirror with the name flaming arrows that they were effective at about the same distance. so they did not need to build burning mirrors. however, the professor says that flaming arrows were not just like the burning mirror, since the Roman soldiers were familiar with flaming arrows then they knew how to put these fires out but they did not know burning arrows, they just see the mirror one second and then fire somewhere that they cannot see on their ships, and it is much more surprising and effective that flaming arrows.
