TPO30_task 1
The reading passage argues that the idea of using burning mirrors by Greek in order to defending themselves is just a myth. However, the lecturer believes that the given reasons are not satisfying. Moreover, she propounds some issues to prove that using burning mirrors is possible. These proofs are explained in three aspects:
First, according to the speaker there are some evidence that prove large burning mirrors are made of many small mirrors. So, making these mirrors didn’t need large copper sheets and high advanced technology to curve them.
Second, the reading mentions that for constant ships with only 30 meters distance, it took 10 minutes from Greek to set the object on fire. However, the lecturer propounds that there were some sticky materials on the ships. These materials catch fire in a second and the fire spreads out fast. That’s why Greek set those on fire instead of wood.
Third, in the reading the writer believes that burning mirrors don’t have any advantage over flaming arrows and Greek didn’t need to use them. While the professor says the reason they used burning mirrors. Roman navy were familiar with flaming arrows. They kept looking on the direction of them, so they could put out the fire fast. However, by using burning mirrors they have no idea about catching fire, and it was more effective and surprising way to defeat them.
