Both the reading and lecture are about Sinosauropteryx which is a kind of dinosaur. A pattern of line on the skeletal bone suggests that this animal had been feather. The reading provides three reasons that this pattern line is not related to a feather and then supports them. The professor casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all arguments dubious.
First of all, the author of reading declares that since this fossil was found in volcanic ash; consequently, these lines can associated with decomposition procedure skin into fibers after death. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She points out that researchers could obtain a huge number of fossils from other animals which had buried in volcanic ash and their body structures have been preserved very well without any change; therefore, the fossil structure of Sinosauropteryx fails to be questionable.
Secondly, the article contends that some scientists believe that dinosaurs had been frills in some parts of their body- it is kind of ornamental fan shaped structure-, so it may have been frill instead of lines of a feather; in the contrast, the lecturer claims that there is a chemical different between a feather and a frill. Unlike a frill, a feather includes a chemical substance such as protein. Fortunately, researchers could gain this aforementioned substance in Sinosauropteryx's fossil.
Finally, the reading passage states that the feathers provide some advantages for the animals such as ability for flight or regulating internal temperature; however, Sinosauropteryx's fossil revealed that the mentioned pattern is located on the backbone and the tail; hence, it could have been useless. This argument is rebutted by the professor again and she expresses that another function of feather is that some animals with having colorful feathers, are able to attract their mate- this behavior is called displace activity- like Pickup bird. She elaborates on this by mentioning that a study on Sinosauropteryx's fossil caused researchers to discover that Sinosauropteryx had a colorful feather including orange and white color.
