Both the reading and lecture are about the sounds which have been called quackers. This strange sound was heard from the 1960s to the1980s by sailors in Russian submarines the North Atlantic and Arctic. Unfortunately, even the sonar- is an approach for discerning objects in underwater- was not able to recognize it. The article provides three theories for these marvelous sounds and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all of arguments dubious.
First of all, the author of reading declares that some believe that the quackers may have been created by male and female orca whales when they were in a courtship, particularly when male orca whale wanted to attract its mate. This point is challenged by the professor. She points out that this hypothesis fails to be correct because these creatures live in surface water not in the deep ocean water that quackers were heard.
Secondly, the article contends that there is a giant marine invertebrate which is called giant squid. It is an clever animal and can emit sound and since it includes a soft body; hence, sonar is not be able to detect it; in the contrast, the lecturer poses that we know that quackers lasted for two decades; however, this soft body species has been living for a long time in Atlantic and Arctic waters. They could not start and stop these types of sounds suddenly.
Finally, the reading passage states that there is a possibility that a foreign submarine from another country may have worked in these waters as spy. This argument is rebutted again. The professor expresses that the sounds were moving and changing in different directions fast. Besides, such the submarines usually produce a noise due to their engine; however, this engine noise was not detected by sonar. The lecturer elaborates on this by mentioning that even nowadays; we do not have such a silent and fast technology as submarine.
