The article states that the strange sounds called quackers was heard in Russian submarines. These sounds were moving quickly. The reading provides three theories for the source of the sounds. The professor explains that some experts have done to find the source of these strange sounds but there are a lot of debates about this until now. However, there are several theories but there are problems for all of them.

First, the reading states that the strange noises were calls of male and female Ocra whales during a courtship ritual. The professor explains that the idea sounds plausible at first but finally refutes this idea. She says that even though the Ocra population in the areas where submarines were picking up are high, Ocra inhabits near the surface of the oceans and submarines were located in the deep waters. So they could not detect the sounds because of the far distances. In addition, if these sounds produced by Ocra whales, submarines could detect them.

Second, the reading claims that the sounds were caused by giant squids. However, the professor opposes the idea and says that the sounds appeared in 1960 and disappeared after two decades. Giant squids lived in the ocean and continued to live. So, it is not realistic to theorize this idea and there is not any reason to start hearing and stop hearing by 1980 and that is why giant squids could not be the source of sounds.

Third, the reading suggests that sounds were emitted by some military technology like another country’s submarines. The professor refutes this point and claims that submarines were held in one place and their directions could not be changed so fast as the strange sounds because these submarines have not been made. In addition, some engine noises heard but we don’t have a technology to detect engine noises.
