The reading passage provides three theories to support the main sources of the underwater noises heard by the Russian submarines. However, the professor believes that this sound is a very strange phenomenon and there are lot of debates what are the main causes. He points out that there are problems with all the theories that are mentioned in the passage.
To begin with, the article contends that this sound may be the calls of male and female ocra whales that inhabit these areas. In the other hand, the professor states that this may be plausible in the beginning but it seems unlikely to be the main cause later. He mentions that the ocra whales live in the surface of the ocean while the submarines usually are located deeply in the ocean so probably they will not be able to hear their noises. Also, he says that the ocra whales can be easily detected by sonar.
Secondly, the author implies that this sound might be caused by a gaint squid which has a soft body without a skeleton and that is why it cannot be detected by the sonar. The lecturer, in contrast, points out that the Russian submarines detected this noise in 1960 and continued hearing it for two decades and then suddenly disappeared. While gaint squids live in the ocean long time ago and continue living till today. He states that no reason to hear the noises for one decade and then suddenly stopped after 20 years.
Finally, the reading posits that this sound may be due to another country's submarines. The professor opposes this point by explaining that this sound moves very fast in different directions and it could not be another submarines since that Russian submarines could not hear the noise of another engine. He states that even with the technology today people can not invent silent engine or fast submarines.
