The author of the passage demonstrates three theories about the purpose and meaning of craved stone balls dated from the late Neolithic period, while the lecturer in the lecture doubts their authenticity.
To begin with, the author claims that the craved stone balls were used as weapons to hunt or fight. However, the lecturer refutes that it is unconvincing, because common weapons in that period, such as arrows and axes, were considerably worn out. So, if it is true that the craved stone balls were used in hunting or fighting, they should be cracked and broken, since these two processes are fierce and can cause a lot of damage. Nevertheless, the surface is actually well-preserved, which rules out the first hypothesis.
Moreover, the author believes that the primitive system of weights and measures might adopt the craved stone balls as a standard unit. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts that it is impossible to interchange them when measuring. Admittedly, they are in a uniform size, but their mass varies significantly at the same time. This is because they were made of different types of stones with various density, such as sand, green stone, and quartzite. As a result, two stone balls with the same size may weight distinctively, making them hard to be used in a measuring system.
Finally, the author puts forward that ancient people might regard the craved stone balls as a social status of their owners. Instead, the lecturer retorts that they were unlikely be considered in that way due to several inconsistent facts. For example, although some stone balls have elaborate designs, others are of too simple craving styles to be a status symbol. Besides, in the past, when someone in a high social ranking dead, he or she would be buried with a lot of possessions. Yet we have never found the stone balls in any tombs or graves, which indicates that they did not belong to the upper-class.
